Technical Notes & Advice

Indoor event photography can be particularly challenging due to low available light & mixed theatrical lighting.

Of particular concern is white balance. While color casts can be somewhat reduced if one chooses to shoot in the (JPEG) format, I highly recommend the RAW format as (WB) can be re-set in post processing to compensate for color inaccuracies.

I used two lenses for this event. 1) Nikkor 50mm f/1.8... 2) Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8

A key to getting great exposures under such poor lighting is knowing when to shoot with ambient light only and when to add some fill flash. When I wanted to frame Dr. Miller with the background screen showing President Regan's quote, I opted for fill flash as this allowed me to expose for the subject while also exposing the back ground. A rather simple technique known as "dragging the shutter" was employed; essentially forcing a slow shutter speed after setting the proper (f/stop) to expose the primary subject.
I did not want my shutter speed to drop below 1/80th/sec for fear of image blur since I was allowing the theatrical lighting to contribute to the image. A balancing act of (ISO/Shutter Speed & F/stop) is required to achieve a good exposure while "dragging the shutter".
The fill light level is driven by knowing the proper ambient light only exposure and then simply reducing the f number by approx (1 to 1.5) stops. Nikon's FV Lock is a great feature that does most of the heavy lifting in determining the proper fill light level. We want the flash to contribute to the exposure, not overwhelm the subject.

The above images were shot at a ISO of 400-1600. FX sensors in DSLR's really rock in this shooting environment as they allow for far less noise than their DX counterparts, especially in the shadow regions of the exposure.
